Ride Of The Kings

It is a part of the Pentecost traditions festival that is celebrated in spring.

The Ride of the Kings Festivals is held in the regional area historically known as Moravian Slovakia. Annually, it is celebrated by Vlcnov, every three years by Hluk, every two years by Kunovice, and every few years by Skoronice as part of another festival called the Slovakian Year. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, this town is home to the largest variety of variations of the Vlcnov costume.

It has been celebrated in largely its present form since 1808, but there is a question as to its origin. One possibility is that it is derived from pagan ceremonies to ensure a good harvest. A similar initiation ceremony takes place in Kyrgyzstan for young men. In the Czech Republic, it is associated with several historical tales, including one in which Matthias Corvinus disguised himself as a woman so that he could escape a deadly battle and another in which the King of Barley was sought in Haná.

The ceremony starts with a religious service and the approval of the Mayor, and ornamentals decorations costumes, and decorations for the horses and riders are prepared. The riders are performed by a group of young men between the ages of 15 and 25. They ride through a village. Following the chanters are pageboys with unsheathed sabers who guard the King, an honor guard with a rose in his mouth (to indicate his silence) who has his face partially covered as well as the other cavalcade members. Women's ceremonial costumes are worn by the King and pageboys, while men's clothing is worn by the other riders.

While riding on decorated horses, the King's retinue stops to chant short verses that comment humorously on the conduct and character of spectators. The chanters receive contributions for their performance, placed either in a money box or directly into the riders' boots. After riding for a few hours, the King's retinue returns home. In the evening, at the King's house, a small feast is served, music is played, and dancing is done.

This traditional responsibility for the Ride of the Kings is passed down from generation to generation. Women and girls in particular are known to make decorations for horses and ceremonial costumes according to the processes, color patterns, and shapes associated with each village.

Today it is mostly a social event rather than a religious feast. Every year, thousands of visitors come to Vlcnov to attend the Ride of the Kings. The festival is organized jointly by Vlcnov's Municipal Office and the local Sports and Culture Club.
