There is a poetic text known as La Galigo, which is written in strict meter and uses particular Bugis vocabulary. The entire work is enormous (an estimated 6000 folio pages) and may be considered the world's largest literary work. It is also known as Sureq Galigo. This poem dates back to roughly the 14th century, is pre-Islamic, comes from oral traditions, and is considered to be epic-mythological in nature. The language is also considered difficult, despite its beauty.
Drama musical based on I La Galigo has been shown worldwide. La Galigo was adapted by Robert Wilson into the musical theatre work I La Galigo, which has been performed in Asia, Europe, Australia, and the United States since 2004. Several narrative threads are interwoven during the course of the drama, other than the one about Sawerigading, a warrior, and his twin sister, We Tenriabeng, a woman.
