Hunting by Saluki (Greyhounds)

It is a tradition among Gulf societies generally, and more particularly among Qatari societies. There is a strong connection between its importance and continuity, as well as the role it played in society throughout the ages. A variety of roles were played by Saluki (Greyhounds) in the past. In addition to being a traditional heritage sport, it had a special relationship with hunting. Through the development of society, this custom has been regulated by laws, celebrated with special festivals, and supported by official government agencies and civil society organizations financially and materially. Historically, this was and still is a public festival where young people show off their hunting and horse riding skills.

Incorporating hunting with Saluki will enhance the value of cultural diversification while enriching the intangible heritage of Qatar. Its positive effects go beyond local dimensions, as well as its positive impact on intangible cultural heritage in general. It will also increase interest in organizing festivals, competitions, and heritage performances for national holidays and occasions. Those who own Saluki dogs (Greyhounds) and hunt with them in Qatar are constantly passing on their knowledge and maintaining a healthy breed for the next generation. The Qatari winter camps are known for providing children and youth with the necessary knowledge and skills to hunt with Saluki in a safe and continuous manner.

The owners of Salukis are keen on preserving the genes of their dogs, as well as passing on pups to trusted individuals to avoid interbreeding. A cultural and economic transition in Qatar has led to the emergence of sports appealing to the youth in all aspects. The efforts of government institutions and individuals were sufficient to ensure the survival of Saluki hunting. Al-Qannas Association is one of the organizations that preserve, frame, document, and promote Saluki hunting. To increase the number of people who are interested in greyhound hunting, the association donates puppies and training annually. Through education, the Ministry of Municipality, the Ministry of Culture, and Qatar Média Corporate, the State of Qatar supports the continuation of traditional practices. It has been incorporated into many traditional and cultural activities to hunt with Salukis. Also, Saluki owners actively participate as volunteers and participants, enabling the element to be defined, preserved, and transmitted to the community. By providing safe conditions for participants from abroad, Qatar contributes to the success of the event by providing security, entry visas, and treatment and care for Salukis in veterinary hospitals and clinics.
