The power of Al-Azi can be found in the powerful voices of the poet and chorus, which 'answers' him. Each chorus member holds a mock rifle in his hands and is arranged in rows behind the poet, who is armed with a sword.
With the call-and-response performance, unity and solidarity are emphasized, and the weapons signify courage. At this festival, poets and a choir exchange poetic lines punctuated by sword movements and sword stepping. The poetry contest is one of the key expressions of Oman's musical and cultural identity.
